From what I've heard it costs quite a bit of money. I personally started out without using any primer at all and I only started using gesso after I already painted with acrylic paint for about a year or so. BUT and it’s a big UPPERCASE BUT , if you are making art to give away as formal gifts, to charity, to sell or for professional purposes, you need to use proper gesso .
